CHIDEOCK MANOR (DT6 6LF A35 2 miles west of Bridport)
Sunday 27th June 10am – 5pm
Every two years, one of Dorset’s most spectacular manor houses throws open its doors to gardeners, offering a chance to hear world-class speakers, buy unusual plants from specialist nurseries, and to enjoy a garden not usually open to the public. This year it’s the turn of historic Chideock Manor, a beautiful manor of medieval origins, surrounded by an outstanding modern garden created by owners Howard and Deirdre Coates since 1996. The garden features a formal parterre, ravishing herbaceous borders, crab apple and lime walks, rose and clematis archways, a stream garden, lake and woodland, all against an idyllic backdrop of Dorset hills and the south coast’s highest cliff.
Many of the West Country’s most prestigious nurseries will be selling plants, alongside a superb array of local garden crafts and accessories. You can enjoy displays and workshops – including an inspirational demonstration of ‘funky’ flower arranging – and of course, delicious lunches and Dorset cream teas.
Lectures will be held in the famous Catholic church at Chideock, shrine to the Chideock Martyrs, which adjoins the garden. The speakers, introduced by revered Dorset gardener Penelope Hobhouse, include Anna Pavord speaking on bulbs; writer, critic and champion of avant-garde gardening, Tim Richardson; and celebrated landscape architect Kim Wilkie, creator of sculpted landscapes and the courtyard garden of the Victoria and Albert museum. There will be a chance to join all the speakers at the end of the day for a discussion on current gardening topics. Lecture tickets go on sale on 1st May on 01308 488232.
Entry costs £5 (children free) and all funds raised will help the DGT to continue its work in protecting the historic parks and gardens of Dorset.
